Blog Post #1 Media Literacy

Media literacy is the anaylysis of media in various forms. Media literacy, however, is not limited to one and only definition. According to Hoechsmann, M., and Poyntz, S.R. (2012), Media literacy is a set of competencies that enable us to interpret media texts and institutions, to make media of our own, and to recognize and engage with the social and political influence of media in everyday life.

Nowadays, media is present in our everyday life whether through television, ads, radio or through our phones which provide us with lots of information in the palm of our hands. Media literacy helps us access, analyze, and understand it.

Hoechsmann, M., and Poyntz, S.R. (2012) have made three points in defining media literacy and that is to not only learn it from teachers, it is more than what we teach and eventually things have shifted in recent years to include media production as an integral component of media literacy and education.
